Here are a few words from Jason Marlow, who has recently purchasd a VB 36 Bowl Master,
Spending hundreds of hours working on any machine can give great insight, avoiding repetitive strain injuries, dealing with vibration etc. Woodturners learn to adapt and compensate for their lathes shortcomings, however, too much compensation will lead to injury.
I established a fulltime studio in Canada in 1980, my recent purchase of a VB36 allows any cuts to be made without compromising or twisting of the spine and neck. This alone is vital for me, but add the mechanical specs of the bearings, plenty of smooth quiet power, lack of vibration through the toolrests, this lathe handles brutally out of balance pieces with ease. I personally am able to work left- or right-handed, reverse hollow turn, and favour push cuts while standing behind the bevel , pull cuts also come into play of course. After many comments of "you don't need it", I am more than happy to use the VB as my main Lathe, it handles runs of smaller scale work and coring is a pleasure with the footswich.
Jason Marlow
I must confess at the end of the day, I still chuckle to myself as I switch the studio light off , "you don't need one of those", I am very pleased to have one.
